
Antoni Awingura is a traditional musician from the Upper Eastern Region of Ghana. He plays a wide variety of traditional instruments including the Kologo (two stringer African lute), the xylophone, the Gonje (one stringed viloin) and a variety of drums / percussion.
He was born in a small rural village called Zorko. At the age of 12 years, he learnt how to play the Wea – the traditional flute and whenever he took the cattle out, he practiced until he mastered it. At the age of 16 years, he migrated from the North to Accra, where he was introduced to Nana Danso, Director of the Pan African Orhestra, which he joined and with whom he toured the UK in 1994 and South Africa in 1999.
While with ‘The Orchestra’ Awine learned many additional local instruments including the Molow (the local guitar ).
After the death of Nana Danso and the dissolution of the Orchestra, Awine joined opportunity to the Guja Band, lead by Prof. Kwame Kakare, playing in night clubs, weddings, festivals and so on. In 2022, Awine joined the Lamisi band and traveled to the Holland in the year 2023 July.
